RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) — Brazil expects to harvest 298 million tons of cereals, legumes and oilseeds this year, a 5.5 percent year-on-year drop from last year’s record harvest, the state-run Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics reported Tuesday.
According to the agency, rice production is expected to increase by 1.9 percent to reach 10.5 million tons, corn production will drop by 10.3 percent to 117.6 million tons, and soybean yields will decrease by 4.3 percent to 145.4 million tons.
Other notable agricultural products this year include cotton, sorghum and coffee, whose production will increase by 10.8, 10.9 and 6.6 percent year on year, respectively, said the agency.
It noted that the cultivated area in Brazil this year will cover 78.6 million hectares, an increase of 0.9 percent compared to 2023. ■
